I don't see what being pretty would have to do with it.

Well, we all know that figure skating is very subjective and judges are after all only humans, so being pretty only helps. ;) Do you think Berezhnaya/Sikharulidze with all their consistency issues would have been as successful as they were had they had the looks of, say, Nina Petushkova and Sergei Sakhnovsky? I don't think so. :watch:

oh my, I can't wait for the new season...I'm so excited about G/E and V/T, and even M/B that I feel I don't ever again want to watch K/S.... I just get the feeling that all these pairs will have the beautiful flow and smoothness in movemensts that I feel is lacking in K/S, and that's what drives me crazy. no more arm wailing and movements all over, please...

Thanks to everybody who provided links, translations and reports!!! it all looks sooooo promising, so happy that Katharina Gerboldt seems to enjoy skating so much, and that Tatiana has found her partner! Stanislav looks adorable in the pics too, always had a soft spot for him!

I think that concerning B/S their main quality was their skating skills, the quality of their elements, the speed and presentation, their transitions as well. So eventhough they were not perfectly consistent, the rest of their skating was so out of this world that they could still get good marks. They being beautifull is secondary and IMO it's a bit reductive to summarize their success with judges. They were just extraordinary skaters.

What about Bazarova-Larianov? Did they not skate? They are one of my favorite young pairs, along with Ilyushchekina-Maisuradze. I have not seen Gerboldt skating pairs yet. No time to watch the videos right now.

I only have seen B/L's SP... Her SBS 3T was similar to how she often does it- no height, 2-footed, kind of underrotated; he pitched forward on the landing; the unison is off. They had problems on the 3twist- she collided with him and landed awkwardly on two feet. The throw 3F was good, and I think the rest of the elements were done well. I don't know what I think of the program yet. It seemed a little slow, but I can't remember that well. I'm still trying to sift through the videos to find their LP.

I think B/S were successful because their skating was gorgeous, and the quality of their work shined through even when they had mistakes. What their faces look like didn't matter. I guess good looks can help make the chemistry between partners more believable, and B/S's body types did help them to form some beautiful lines, but other than that, I don't think "prettiness" means anything.

I agree with you.
I don't know if a good looking pair or skater gets automatic bonus marks (it's part of the subjectivity in this sport) but in the case of B/S it was obvious that their skating spoke in itself. They didn't need to have nice faces.
By the way there are tons of gorgeous skaters who don't get to the top, as well as there are a lot of average looking or even not so good looking skaters who manage to reach the top. It's all about skating, the look is a marginal part.

But looks does play a very important role, otherwise skaters, male and female, wouldn't spent so much time fussing over their hair, tans, makeup, etc. I think a major reason why the ice dancers Natalia Bestemova and Andrei Bukin (?) were not more popular was because of their looks. It didn't prevent them from winning Olympic and Worlds, but still, they would've been so much more if they were "beautiful". Yes, it's superficial, but that's the way it rolls.

I was told that Bazarova/Larionov did only their SP and weren't there the second day as they prepared to leave for the Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf. However, Menshov and Tretiakov are also going to Oberstdorf and still performed on both days.

I was told that Vera had slight cold on the day they skated the SP. So the team doctor recommended not to take the risk skating LP a couple of couple of days before their departure for Germany but filled Vera with medicine and made her stay at Novogorsk traning center (they are not from Moscow and stayed there during the test skate and before the departure for Oberstdorf) on Sunday.

Now I see why Tarasova went meh re I/K. They are clearly less prepared at the moment than other teams. But I love their programmes, recycled lifts notwithstanding. This is their first year in seniors, no big deal about recycling. Iffy twizzles disturb me much more. But they are both gorgeous in their FD. Methinks we'll see more in-betweens there as the season starts ;)
B/S look almost completely ready for the season, and their teknik is quite impressive. But she attacks the FD with all the lyricism of a seasoned porn star.

I dunno. I think I/K's SD is very decent but the FD looks very bland to me.

The programs are ok and they will get better with more practice but after the last season's programs, the bar was set very high.

I was expecting amazing from I/K and they didn't deliver.

As much as I hate Kawaguchi (and I hope her arm falls off in competition, eventually), their SP is excellent. Lots of transitions, strong choroegraphy.

Iliuschechkina/Maisuradze looked polished, nice programs, but with her being that inconsistent I can't see them getting anywhere. Shame because they have the X factor and the SP was fantastically skated (other than the 3twist with no catch - they don't have enough height and should stick to a double IMO).

Volosozhar/Trankov both have great basics, they look good together and you can see they have "it." Elements are rough but surely will improve with time. Their programs however... No excuse. Two overused pieces of music, two bland boring routines. Morozov messed up big time. (Although maybe I should reserve judgement until they are competition ready).

Men all looked horrific.

Leonova's choroegraphy is brilliant in both programs. But with no jumps, she'll fall off the team. Hopefully it's just because she was ill.
