I miss all the Finnish ladies! Such SOPHISTICATION ... Even alisa drei and alisa mikonsaari ain't bad ... Sigh ... I was watching Cup of China and the first Chinese lady skated to don Juan .. Which immediately think of Laura lepisto ... That same girl skated to howls moving castle for the sp which I think Laura skated to also. One simply cant compare between them tho. When Laura and other Finnish ladies skated I completely fell in love ... Too bad figure skating is such a fleeting sport .....

No honorable mention for Elina Kettunen? I always had a soft spot for her.

Yes! The program that could single-handedly challenge Ashley Wagner's Gay Icon title

That's got to be one of the emptiest programs ever.

But I agree, I kinda liked the Abba muzak program in a very cheesy way.

It was Vähämaa who did Howl's Moving Castle. I think she was one of the first to use that music in skating.

The goold ole' days of 2002. Or maybe not so good. I love the fact this used to pass for a ftwk sequence back in those those days. I think this was one of her best skates, so the empty program seems like a good strategy.

Kettunen had blades like butter :swoon: I remember being gobsmacked the first time I saw her and Poykio -- even Drei -- live for the first time in Malmo. The only other skater with blades that soft and glide that smooth was Curry, and by the time I saw him live, he had taken his skating in a different direction, program-wise.

I know. When watching that I only realized that it actually IS the footwork sequence when it was over halfway done. Nowadays most of the transitions are harder than that required footwork. :P

So lovely to hear Susanna Pöykiö commentating the GP series on the YLE broadcasts. She completely disappeared for quite a while so it's good to hear from her. I've really enjoyed her commentary so far - very calm and knowledgeable. :)

Yes, I have started to hope that they will hire her as a permanent commentator. She is not talking all the time, takes her time to reflect the rpgrams, is not overpositive put very encouraging, and her Oulu dialect is just lovely.

For those who understand Finnish (or if you just enjoy watching Kiira ;)), I highly recommend watching today's Inhimillinen tekijä that featured Kiira and also Tero Pitkämäki (javelin thrower) and Sanni Leinonen (former alpine skier). They mainly talked about how to deal with injuries in high level sports. Kiira was wonderfully intelligent and very honest about her feelings in the interview, loved it.

I was hoping they'd notice the similarities between Kiira's and Tero's careers, as both of them messed up their only chance of winning a medal in front of a home crowd. Kiira had to pause her LP at Helsinki Europeans because of a bad fall finishing 5th and Tero couldn't handle the heavy rain at Helsinki Worlds finishing 4th.

^ :( At least in the skating though, Finland still got the gold and bronze :D
