Her programs used to be extremely bland and had absolutely no character.

Her movements in East of Eden had pretty much no connection to the music, the straight line steps being just .

I'll take attempts at perk any time over blandness.

When skated well, Slaughter on the Tenth Avenue looked fantastic. It had a little perk, a lot of drama, nice highlight movements, It worked.

I just have a really dumb question but have to ask, even though I know the answer. How the hell did this girl who everyone says was lack luster, ever reach the podium? Was this PCS scores and Tom and USFS pushing crap on everyone?

I still think their body types are quite similar.

Well, that clip is from year 2000, here is what Hamill looked like in her 1976 Olympic lp:

It is the body type and the posture which make Hamill look so elegant. And also having a neck... Flatt practically does not have one (or at least it is veeery short) and she looks plump, although she does not have overweight. It is just her bone structure, I think. And one cannot do anything to correct those faults.

Not to dump on Rachael, but she has benefited from her date of birth in that it determines the field she has competed against. The U.S. ladies field is just not very deep or consistent right now. Put her back in the Kwan-Cohen-S. Hughes-Nikidinov-et al era and she would have had a very difficult time reaching the podium at Nationals. Send her to Japanese Nats where the field is ridiculously deep and she wouldn't see a podium.

Would "Wicked" be nearly as good without the vocals? I don't think so... the real strengths of that music are the strong vocal leads and intricate harmonies.

I think it would be. Here's what I think would make an ideal program:

1. Open with the "overture" which opens "No One Mourns the Wicked." Find something symphonic and cut in advance of Glinda's entrance.
2. Proceed to "When I Meet the Wizard."
3. Follow that with a little bit of "Wonderful" (which comes with a dance opening). Cut from the dance opening to the "fast part" at the very end, and jump from there to...
4. "Dancing Through Life," which contains a dance interlude.
5. End with a little bit of the end of "Defying Gravity."

I don't know if I've explained what I'd do clearly enough, but that's what I've imagined for a while. I really think it'd be perfect for Mirai.

So you're saying Dorothy doesn't look elegant in 2000? The year is irrelevant, because Dorothy's posture looks great no matter how her body may have changed. Even in 76, she was not as rail thin as many of her competitors. Even then, she and Rachael have similar body types. The reason you think Flatt is bigger and has no neck is because of her posture, not because of her physique.

Dorothy looks as elegant in 2000 with a compact womanly body as she did in the 70's. That has less to do with her body type and more to do with Carlo Fassi. Look at Peggy, Dorothy, Jill, and Nicole. Four completely different woman with different shapes that always showed beautiful carriage, line, and amazing body awareness.

Even after years of abuse to her body and clearly not at the weight of an elite athlete, Nicole looks positively regal in this recent clip:

I know she coach hopped, but Carlo was there early in her career yelling at her from across the rink to stretch, point, and extend. If Tom, Becky, or Lori had done that for Rachael, I think she could have many of these qualities too.

Because she was the most consistent since Cohen and Meissner in 2006, and whatever weaknesses she has - there is always someone worse (basics / technique - Zhang, nerves / cheated jumps - Nagasu / Czisny, etc)

Lets just hope one of the US ladies comes out next year and kicks some ass. I'm tired of the head cases that can't keep it together when the going get rough. And lets hope it's not someone mediocre like Rachael.

Yes, isn't that amazing? I was shocked when I first saw this a while ago--couldn't believe it was the video of the same Rachael. Where has this lovely skater gone?

Rewarded for her consistency plus Tom Z's politics, I guess.

I still think their body types are quite similar. It just doesn't seem like it because of the way Dorothy carries herself: Head up, shoulders back, arrns extended fully and naturally. If Rachael did this, she would appear slimmer, too. And for the record, she HAS a neck :) If she would hold her head up high and project outwardly instead of hunching, it would be more obvious.

ETA: Comparison http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD8xLQxytkA (Even in the opening pose, you can clearly see her shoulders collapse inwardly and her head caves into her neck.)

Rachael can only dream of skating like Dorothy did in that clip (at what age--41?)

I would of course be the odd person who was first drawn to this sport by-gasp!-Rachael.

Either way, she does get a lot of strife around here.
