From their blog - "Doubts and hopes" (http://www.sports.ru/tribuna/blogs/muhortova-trankov/72188.html)
Hello, everyone, the worlds are soon and we are getting ready. We want to do in Turin better than in Vancouver. It's very important for us. Right now we are going through a hard period in our lives and we decided to share that with you.

MT: Our contract with the federation expires at the end of the season and we will compete at worlds. We are working now, getting ready. After the worlds we'll decide together with the coach whether to continue.

MM: I want to go on skating, am still young. It's for Maxim to decide

MT Maria and I have a normal relationship, no hardships. We do our job. She spoke to me about our future, but we decided to postpone the serious decisions till after the worlds.

MM: Maxim doesn't show his feelings during the trainigs, but the coach and I realize how hard it is for him. Yes, we failed the Olympics, but now we have to switch and get ready for the next competition. We are leaving to Turin on 21/3.

MT: The training is fine, we are polishing the programmes. Frankly after the Olympics I don't want to skate at all. Some sort of depression which is hard to overcome. On the other hand I come to the training, do my job and leave. I don't get stuck in the thoughts.

MM: Am over the Olympics. There is nothing you can do about now. First it was very hard to realize we blew it. It was also hard to realize that if you're n.1 in Russia you would be supported, the rest are not. It's not only about us - just the sheer result of Hohlova Novitski. But that's only my opinion.

MT: I think our problem is ourselves. We don't work well. I don't mean the coach, I mean us, the skaters. We have to change something in order to move to the next level.

MM: The pressure is building, the whole body hurts, but that's normal. We, sportsmen, are used to it. I hope we'll do better in Turin than in Vancouver. In many ways the result there will decide upon our future. We don't plan anything now - too many times we had plans and all failed. I don't think of the placement, we don't have the pressure. Before the Olympics I was counting the months: 3, 2, 1... now I don't. Of course we feel the responsibility about our placing in the championship, but we can breath now.

Trankov: am obliged to compete at the worlds (http://www.gzt.ru/topnews/sport/-maksim-tranjkov-esli-by-ne-obyazateljstva-my-by-/295192.html)

After the Olympics 2006 the Russian pairs skating started it's journey towards the next gold from the blank page. Without any leaders left 2 young pairs MMMT and UKAS during the 4 years were competing with each other with changing results. At the end both pairs became quite strong, but both failed in Vancouver. They lacked the Olympic experience and preparation time under the known specialists Moskvina and Vasiliev. For Muhortova/Trankov the 7th place instead of the medal was such a blow that the skaters still don't know what to do next: leave the sport or change something in the pair. About their hardships and worries after the Olympics Trankov tells:

Q: Have you recovered both physically and mentally after hte Olympics?
A: DOn't know. Perhaps the worlds will show. We are getting ready to the next competition and trying not to think of what already happened. I feel fine. We are trying to get into the rhythm and not look back.

Q: Are you motivated to skate at the worlds?
A: Not yet. I just want to skate better, than at the Olympics.

Q: Probably now when the pressure is gone it should be easier?
A: We are not n.1. We are not really pressured, at least much less than the first pair. So there is no pressure. I can't really say we were too pressured during the Olympics either. We skated for ourselves without thinking of the results.

Q: I thought the division on the 1st and the 2nd is kind of symbolic after all it's not as subjective as in the ice dance.
A: So it seems. But in reality there is that. In any discipline there is the Russia n.1 and Russia n.2. Of course we have a chance to beat Kawaguti/Smirnov, but not much. If both pairs skate equally the first pair is preferred.

Q: How will you get ready for the championship if you are not motivated?
A: The way I always did. I'm just not in the mood, to put it mildly.

Q: If you didn't have a contract with the federation which obliges you to compete would you go there?
A: No.

Q: Will the result of the worlds have an impact on your decision to go on skating?
A: No. I already decided, but will not voice it. What if something chances and I change my mind.awwww... what a sweet 17y.o. girl who changes her mind...

Q: When making a decision did you consult the partner and the coach?
A: Each decided for himself whether to go on or retire. Of course at the end of the season and the contract we'll have a talk. The coach also has to decide whether to go on working with us, whether to sign a new contract. We are 3 adults who will think of their lives. It's business, not a family.

Q: There are rumours you are to pair with the Ukranian Tatiana Volosozhar. Comment on that please.
A: It's a rumour indeed, but there is no steam without a fire. During the last 5 years, after Maria, Tatiana and I switched to seniors there are talks about how nice it would be if Volosozhar skated with Trankov. In general Maria is no worse than Tanya, in some things may be even better. Her jumping technique might be a bit worse(really?? we haven't noticed), but there are elements she does better than Tanya(why didn't he name one? just one!). First of all I can't really say I want to skate with Volosozhar. (idiot. Shes a diva) Secondly we didn't have any serious talks with Tanya. Just that alot of people would want us to skate together. I doubt I will be offered to skate with her - had such offer being considered it would had been made by now. The pair Volosozhar-Morozov retired, I heard it from them that Tatiana will try to skate with some Canadian skater. If I receive an offer from her I will consider but can't really say whether I want to switch partner. Besides, the Federation will have alot to say on the matter. It's just 4 years till the Olympics and the end of the career and it's risky to switch partners for such a short period.

Q: What does your partner lack? Do you think you would be better with a different partner?
A: I would be better with Volosozhar had we paired at 2005. I wanted it then and asked her to. It's not a secret for Maria, we had bad relationship and at 2006 we even parted and didn't skate for several month. Everyone were doing their own things back then. Now the talks about me being potentially stronger than Maria are wrong. I think I have less potential than her. So if we stop skating after this season it will be because of me.

Q: Last year you worked with a shrink. Would you consider his help again?
A: No. Last year it was helpful. He did teach many things. How to concentrate before the skate, how to deal with hard situations etc. But I think we need a separate specialist, not something who worked at the same time with the other guys from the St. Petersburg figure skating academy. When there is a crowd there is no point.(so what prevents him from paying his own shrink? perhaps he shouldn't skate because there are other people who use the ice as well? For what it's worth it's not clear from the interview whether the shrink was working with other sportsmen as well and that what bothers Trankov or whether the sessions were the group sessions rather than private and that what he minds)

Q: What helps you to take your mind away from the sport.
A: Recently - nothing does. This season has been so long - it started in August and it just can't finish. I'm sick of the ice by now.

Q: Do you have any plans for the vacation?
A: Not yet. But I will certainly go somewhere hot. I didn't have a vacation for 2 years. It was decided for me. Maria had a vacation last year, I haven't. So I really want to have a vacation and just switch my mind off things.

Q: Do you have anything you would like to try, any ideas for figure skating?
A: I would love to win the Olympics. Or at leas medal.

Q: With such thoughts you'll have to stay till Sochi.
A: Don't know. We'll see. No, I will stay in some way in the sports till Sochi. Just not necessarily as a skater. You can win as a coach as well. Oh well, that's just my fantasies.

Q: Do you think you could be a coach?
A: I think so. Am being asked to help in St. P. alot. The guys are coming, asking for my advice, I manage to explain. But am not sure that I want to remain in figure skating for the rest of my life. Of course I will if I have to, but I don't really want to. Funnily enough, I don't like this sport. It is compared to the art many times, while the art was always the only way to fight the politics and the current regime. Figure skating is an art that is related to the politics. For me it's same-same so I don't want to remain in that. Besides, I don't even like it as a sport. (brrrrrr... so why do you skate???)

Q: Which sports do you like?
A: Everythign.... football, hockey, biathlon and so on. Except for curling, I think.

Q: But we have the best looking female curlingists.
A: They are just the youngest.

Q: What interests you except for the sports as a future profession?
A: Dont know. Many TV sports journalism(sorry hon, not with your pronunciation nor with your lexicon.), may be theatre. I don't know yet.

Thanks TAHbKA! :)

I think Maksim badly needs a vacation. He can hardly collect his thoughts or remember what he said a minute ago! Both of them seem totally worn out!

Both of them seem to have tried hard to express what they think and what they really feel, even when this is difficult. Refreshing. :)

The pair Volosozhar-Morozov retired, I heard it from them that Tatiana will try to skate with some Canadian skater.

Hmmm, just rumour and speculation? Who would be most likely - Eric Radford?

Thanks for the translations. I really hope against hope that this team stays together. The idea of Volosozhar/Trankov is appealing, but I thought M/T looked really good this season, very much like a classic Russian pair. I hope they have a happier experience at Worlds.

Yes.

Thanks for the translation of a very interesting article. It feels like they need hugs all around; it's almost painful to read how negative they feel about themselves.

I hope they eventually come to realize thay they are a much better team than what they seem to feel they are at the moment.

I do admire them for sticking to their commitment to go to worlds even when they clearly don't feel like doing it.

It probably didn't help that their coach was the coach of the previous Olympic champions. Although that fact wasn't stated, I'm sure it's in the back of their minds and affected their expectations going into the Olympics.

That's the only one I can think of. He has a classical style that would suit Volo. He also used to train alongside her under Ingo Steur.

I could really see Volo and Trankov together though.

Eric Radford has many great qualities about his skating. Of all the Canadians he fits Volozozhar the best. He knows Volo from training in Germany, and I think he trained with Brian Orser too.

In general Maria is no worse than Tanya
I think Tatiana has slightly better skating skills than Maria.

How emo could one be? :drama: And he wants to coach, despite hating the sport and being totally indecisive about his future?

Erm, that's because K&S are better skaters with more difficult programs. Disheartening to see this line of thinking from both Max and Maria. I would think Oleg would dissuade that after having coached T&M, who came up the old fashioned way, simply by having harder programs, improving their skating skills every year, and hitting every time. There is a LOT of room for M&T to improve before they can complain about politiks.

I do wish V&T had gotten together 5 years ago, but 4 years is plenty of time. Many of the great pairs came together and won a world title or Olympic medal within their first four years together: B&S, S&P, Pettikhs, S&S, K&D.

He couldn't really say in the interview `Muhortova is a lousy skater and can't land a 3T to save her life', could he. It takes Zhulin to reply a journalist when asked about Grischuk `well, what do you want me to say, that she's an idiot?'. Trankov still has a long way till he can afford that (if ever)

Thank you for the translation! :)

Trankov does sound kind of burnt out in this interview, I hope he gets to take some time off after Worlds.

I think pairing Tatiana with Radford will be not very wise, she or he whether they choose to represent will have to wait 2 years until can skate internationally on either a European Championship-4CC and the chances of getting GPrix assignments without a ranking will hurt them a lot, giving very little international exposure and just like 2 or 1 season prior to a potential Olympic experience in 2014.

Volosozhar and Trankov needs to be paired, period

How is this any different than if she paired with Trankov?
