But you are not in the public eye and under the scrutiny of the media. Someone who is, like Maxim, is more likely to be caught unawares in a private moment and have that moment made public. People in the public eye have ups and downs like anyone else and at times let their game face slip.

Point is I wouldn't even do it at work. If I had an important decision, like this one to make, i would take my time and talk about it with the people directly affected first. And they would be the first to know. I would not do the discourtesy of talking about it before a decision was definite. Maxim has behaved very unprofessionally.

And caught unawares in a private moment??? He was talking to a journalist. It was unprofessional.

'Game face' slipping is more a case of Maria's dive like behaviour after bad skates. This was more a case of: You really didn't think this through.

I think also the relationship between Russian skaters and their media is different. For some reason Russian skaters tend to let it "all hang out" with the media. We read the translations and think "Whoa. TMI and chill out." But it's happened many, many times, so I'm thinking that maybe it's just more acceptable in Russia to air out a grievance. If you think this is bad, remember the days when we'd get blow by blow accounts of the Grishuk/Zhulin/Usova/Navka quadrangle, by the participants themselves?

You see I found that hilarious. However I never wavered in my belief that they were all idiots during that time. And some of them have remained idiots.

I like it. They don't seem to have athlete PR classes. No zombies.

Thank you for the translation! :)

Trankov does sound kind of burnt out in this interview, I hope he gets to take some time off after Worlds.

The poor guy sounds *very* burnt out. He seems to be questioning how much much more of his life he's willing to sacrifice to skating. I'd love to see him partner with Volozhar and win a medal in Sochi but he's the only one who can decide how much more of the training/competition grind he can take.

If M&T were to really split, I think Blanchard would be a great match for Maria. Wasn't he in Vasiliev's group to begin with? He has the right to compete for Russia, and he hasn't been out on international competition for a while, they could start with the Rostelecom cup next season...

Yes, Jerome Blanchard is a Vassiliev pupil. However, he already has a Russian partner, Valeria Vorobieva. They haven't competed internationally because the French federation won't release him to compete for Russia. IIRC.

How old is Blanchard now? I remember seeing him at Worlds in 2001. Must be pushing 30?

You know I can kind of understand Emo Max's POV. If your partner is a moody diva who's also banging your coach, who openly hates you, why would you be happy and want to continue with skating?
Either way I think Oleg Vasiliev needs to be more professional with his students, and:

1. not bang his female students
2. not alienate his male ones

I didn't realize there was bad blood between Vasiliev and Trankov. Then again, I didn't realize Vasiliev was romantically involved with Maria either. How did Vassiliev and Maxim Marinin get along?

Blanchard HAS BEEN released by the FFSG. Two or three years ago. It never worked with his partner Vorobieva.

Are releases permanent and non-conditionals, i.e. not based on skating with a specific partner or for another specific Federation?

How did Vassiliev and Maxim Marinin get along?I don't know, but sitting in the front row when T/M had that terrible accident at SA 2004 I remember thinking how great Vassiliev was, comforting Maksim and being strong for him. He must have been terrified for Tatiana, but he didn't break down or show it. He was great.

Re: the "do not bang his female students" advice. Do you really think Vasiliev cares about this general "how to behave" rule? I doubt it. He's a free man and he does what he pleases, regardless of others' standards of morality. I also doubt this would hurt his coaching significantly. It hasn't in the past, and is unlikely to in the future, especially with russian students, many of whom share culturally inculcated views that this kind of thing often happens when you work very closely together.

I just watched M/T:s SP from this yearīs Europeans, and for a guy who hates figure skating, he skates very passionately and expressively. I guess he is seriously burned out, too. Poor Maxim.

I saw M/T at the first time when they won JGF in Helsinki, 2004, and I thoght they had a lot of potential. While I am sad if they will break up, I canīt help liking the idea about Volosozhar-Trankov. I just wish all the best for them all.

What Maxim really needs right now is a good sports psychologist and a long vacation somewhere far-far away from Russian Federation, skating rinks and Vassiliev where he could completely forget about skating and give his body and mind some rest.

He has had a difficult season, is exhausted and frustrated (which is perfectly understandable given the circumstances), but things might look completely different after a couple of weeks of good rest. He and Maria have a lot of potential as a pair and one bad competition doesn't make them a hopeless team. As much as I love Tatiana Volosozhar, I really don't want to see M/T split :(: they just started looking like a REAL pair and Maria became a bit more consistent with the jumps, so I hope that they manage to work things out and continue to skate together until Sochi.

Yes, plus his female students are all adults capable of making informed decisions so I don't see what's the problem. The relationship certainly didn't hurt TTMM's career.
