Just because the guy sounds a bit disillusioned and sad doesn't mean anything necessarily. I'm sure we've all gone through those periods. It doesn't mean with a new partner and coaching situation, things might not look up for him.

I appreciated his frankness. The pressure on Russian athletes in general has been huge and it's not surprising that some are going to be reconsidering their sport and their future.

M&T have often seemed joyless so none of what Trankov said comes as a surprise. I'm sure he pretty much has to go to Worlds to get three spots of Russia - it is not going to be easy for him to just quit.

Wow, I didn't realize Maria and Maxim were already 25 and 27.

I don't know why, but thought they where each about 2-3 years younger.

I'll admit that I'm a bit :swoon: for him, but he does seem pretty immature for 27.

I believe they are 24 and 26 actually. Close enough though. :)

True. It sounds like if you aren't the number 1 team in Russia and don't win medals, you are looked down upon. It's not fair to place those type of expectations on athletes. M/T haven't even been World medalists yet, so it wouldn't have been right to definitely expect them to medal at the Olympics. Of course, they can be disappointed with how they skated, but it's not right if their federation is making them feel even worse.

Anyway, maybe Trankov will snap out of it eventually. Everyone deserves some time to get over disappointing events.

This is correct. They turn 25 and 27 respectively later this year.

Can we think who should we pair Moody Maria with, since this young girl wants to skate?

While you are at it, can you pair me with someone?

Well 26 (as someone has already said) going on 27 later in the year. And yes he seems very immature. Because that interview was utterly childish. With all his shrugging and 'I don't know' despondency and mooning about 'having to' do things. You’re an adult Max, and it’s your life. If you don't want to do something: Don't do it. Also it is a matter of professionalism that when a contract is signed you have to see it through. But for goodness sake keep quiet about it until then.

Emo Max has a lot of growing up to do, and I can't believe I'm actually the same age as him.

I'm a whole lot older than that and he sounds like a man in his 20s to me, reflecting back on what he's done thus far and considering making some changes to his life path.

Maturity doesn't mean you never have moments of doubt, sadness, confusion and regret. One hopes that with age, comes wisdom and a stronger ability to deal with such moments. But they never go away unless you become old and complacent with one foot in the grave and one hand on the TV converter.

The late 20s is typically an emotionally turbulent time of reassessment and change. Give poor Max a break!!

It's not the turbulent feelings or doubt or sadness that I think smacks of immaturity. Believe me I often have those moments myself; where I am often an incontrollable drama, weeping queen with my nearest and dearest. It's just that though. It's confined to my intimate circle and it certainly isn't said in public. Especially when other people's careers are at issue as well.

You know I can kind of understand Emo Max's POV. If your partner is a moody diva who's also banging your coach, who openly hates you, why would you be happy and want to continue with skating?
Either way I think Oleg Vasiliev needs to be more professional with his students, and:

1. not bang his female students
2. not alienate his male ones

I think his reaction is a continuation of his state of mind after the Olymic SP. He's blaming himself, saying very good things about his partner, and is unhappy.

Every time I remember his reaction after the SP I am just :fragile: :wuzrobbed . I'm not sure I ever felt so bad for a figure skater.

Radford wouldn't, because the last time he competed for Canada (with Hadford) in international competition was Skate Canada 2008

Hadford/Radford?

Rachel Kirkland was his partner before Giroux.

We don't really know if any of those things are true. Maria and Max may not hate each other at all. They seem to be okay this season.

His reaction just seems a normal reaction to such a disappointment of the Olympics, and a lack of maturity and insight on his behave (that emotions like this always follow things like this and its not always the best time to start voicing them in public) that he voiced this to the media. That's all.

The guy just had a terrible experience at the most important competition of his career; I'm sure he's devastated, embarrassed and has the weight of his country on his shoulders.

We've heard before that one shouldn't make important decisions when they are on a high or a low...I think that applies here. I hope he takes some time after Worlds to get away from the pressure and decide if his heart is really in the sport. I hope it is.

But you are not in the public eye and under the scrutiny of the media. Someone who is, like Maxim, is more likely to be caught unawares in a private moment and have that moment made public. People in the public eye have ups and downs like anyone else and at times let their game face slip.
