True there are more to matchups than just the individual abilities on a surface. Still Venus is not a good clay courter at this point in her career. She goes out in the French Open at the 3rd round every year it seems then wins Wimbledon a month later. Even Serena who struggles and is clearly past her prime on clay has a bit better results on it of late.

Anyone notice that Marco Djokovic got a wild-card into the Serbian Open (no surprise there) and lost 1st rd. At least he was respectable in losing to diMauro 6-7, 7-5, 6-0. He also lost in the 1st rd of doubles. How old is Marco now? 19 or so?

Kudos to both Isner and Querrey for going out and taking their lumps on the clay and at least playing clay ct tournaments in Europe. Should help them for Roland Garros. Maybe they can both win a few rds there which is probably more then either Roddick or Blake will do who have avoided clay like the plague.

Venus sure has had a tough draw over in Rome. Patty Schnyder and S. Peer in the first 2 rds and now Jankovic in the rd of 16. Good win for Ivanovic today beating Dementieva in straight sets.

Eh, Patty is a shell of her former self, and she is Venus's bitch (another 10-0 H2H). Her early rounds aren't too bad. Jankovic then her sister is tough though.

Good for Ana, but the 2nd set was awful and Elena was even worse.

Jankovic d. V. Williams 60 61   :cheer:

So much for a 3 set match...

Venus isnt really a contender on clay at this point, hasnt been since 2004 for that matter. Clay court season is just to get some matches under her belt and a warmup for Wimbledon. She played several matches here, won a couple vs decent opponents, good enough for her.

Yeah, she hasn't had a win over a top 10 player on clay since either 2003 or 2004. In any case, it's been at least 5 or 6 years.

I really, really hope JJ and Justine are on separate halves of the FO draw.

Jankovic is still a headcase. If she goes into the FO with any expectations at all she'll probably tank.

Agree that Venus is no threat on clay. :(

Just heard the scoop on Feliciano Lopez.....he's gonna be a daddy in a few months although he's no longer with the baby's mother.

Yeah, and the ex is going to the media about it; I think she's a former Miss Universe for Spain or something.

I'm very intrigued about tomorrow's Serena/Jelena match.

Logging time on clay is starting to pay dividends for both Isner and Querrey. Last week they made the doubles finals in Rome and now both are in the semi's in Serbia! :) Didn't realize until today that they were actually seeded 2&3!

So the king of retires did it again and this time in his own family's tournament! I guess his retirements know no boundaries. I've never even heard of the guy he retired against....Krajinovic or something like that.

Could be an all-American final on clay in Serbia!! :P

Bummer for Serena....she twice served for the match and couldn't get it done against Jankovic. Stands weren't even half full for the match. Further proof that womens tennis is on life support. Without the mens tour to hang on to it wouldn't survive right now.

Eh, whatever, Rome stands are always empty. There have been some really good matches on the tour this year, and I'm glad Henin and Kim are back. I'm so happy for Jelena! :cheer: I knew she could win this; I just wish the quality had been better. I've never seen Serena serve twice for it, have match points, be up 5-2 in the tie break and then lose. I'm glad JJ stayed strong. Beating the Williams sisters back to back is a great feat.

Now watch her lose tomorrow to Martinez Sanchez

Krajinovic is a young Serb prospect - I think he's only 17 or 18 and has a nice ranking. He's done quite well in Challengers and Futures.

ETA: Serena put up her hand (lol), and JJ's ace didn't count and at the net she said something like "Sorry, I'm not Justine Henin"

Martinez Sanchez is playing some great serve and volley tennis this week. I think the final could go either way and it wouldnt surprise me if Martinez Sanchez won either. Not to take anything away from JJ who is playing some good tennis lately but beating Venus on clay is an insignificant win. Beating Serena on clay is a good win but it is nothing like beating say Henin on clay.

Martinez Sanchez up 3-1 early in the Rome final on JJ.

05-08-2010, 04:11 PM
The Rome final is great so far; MJMS playing so well and JJ having to fight. C'mon JJ!!

05-08-2010, 04:17 PM
JJ wins 3 games in a row including breaking Martinez Sanchez twice for a 6-5 lead.

05-08-2010, 04:27 PM
Tiebreak. Both have squandered set points. JJ is irritating me; has to fight from 2-5 and does so being far more aggressive; it gets to 6-5 and she sits back again.
