How did he get Elvira Mistress of the Dark (http://www.elviramistressofthedark.com/) to sing backup?

Tell me about it... Her son used to go to my school so we had to listen to her every year at the school concert :yikes:

I realize that this is probably somewhere in the 40 plus pages, but... bear with me. I am a US Citizen and therefore uneducated in the ways of Eurovision!

Should I assume that when I get to Europe Tuesday that the evenings of 25, 27 and 29 May I can watch this on TV. (25 May I am in London, the rest of the time I am in Paris)

I generally don't go to Europe to watch TV, but did catch this one time by accident and loved it (for reasons I won't even try to defend:) ) And it looks like I picked a cold/wet week so evening activities may be more limited anyway.

And so that I understand. Are there different "groups" on both the 25 and 27 and then the final is live on 29?

SORRY FOR THE IGNORANCE but the Eurovison webage seems to think that everyone understands this and has hidden any useful info from me:)

Carolla5501, the answer to your question is yes.
You will most likely see it on the BBC channel if you're in England, but even if you weren't in Europe at that time you would have been able to see ESC online.
And yes there are 2 semis. 10 countries from each one of them will quallify to the finals and join the big 4 countries (Spain, UK, France and Germany) plus the hosting country (Norway).

Since the number of participants has increased in the last years, the contest came up of with a semi-final, held two days before the final. Since 2008, there has been two semi-finals, in order to give other countries a chance to qualify for the final. This year, the two semi-finals will be held on the 25th and 27th, and the final on the 29th.

:)

Was I any help?

Semi 1 will be on BBC3 at 8pm on 25th. In Paris, both shows will start on 27th and 29th at 9pm. I don't know if France 3 will broadcast Semi 2 on the 27th as they are not voting in it though.

Wheeeeeeeeeeee Frenchies are :rockstar:

I told you the main hope was probably put in the sekret dance. :hat1:
Well it's effective. But dull anyway. It won't last a summer. :P
We are specialists in summer hits with sonorities from "the South" and/or summer dances (south begining with the south of France, Spain and Italy).

... 1985 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAYD9tiTKUQ), 1986 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDOxbkj6KXg), 1987 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ9IprKAbC0&feature=related) (the begining of success for zouk with the celebrity of Kassav, Zouk Machine, Joelle Ursull (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtehUA2nEeg)), 1988 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mifnMC_Kn1Q) (the novelty being they were speaking spanish, but were still coming from France), 1989 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AfTl5Vg73A) (this one is a happy mix, brazilian singers, bolivian song brought together by french producers and TF1 who made big bucks on it internationally), 1990 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPdrGOFXzGA&feature=fvst), 1991 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi4bI1PLBsI&feature=fvst), 1992 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3tk2Atn2vE), 1993 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERcF_2nfHJU), 1994 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LweA7NLPB0c), 1995 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi2rdd86U5o), 1996 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCevP9DJtIY), 1998 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz4aeYPl-0Q), 1999 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjyf-5SIo9I&feature=related), 2000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5JiDIzNIpY&translated=1) (this one is franco-italian), 2002 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzgjiPBCsss), 2003 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp1PRi8QaB8), 2004 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8u1GNOMTso), 2005 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAW-OhUfKs0), 2007 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsGrCTn5YFI), 2008 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oERRqCSvWbY) ...

The international success of the Gipsy King which were heavily promoted by a host from TF1 in 1988 marked the begining of a real industrialisation of the summer hits. The year after, TF1 launched Kaoma and the Lambada as a marketing product. Since then, the TV channels have parterned with the industry music to have their own summer hit. They have searched everywhere in francophone Africa, in Latin America and in the Caraibean for styles and artists (and later diversified with electro music). France 3 was perfectly knowing what they were doing when they picked Matador, for a mindless song and a hot/energetic dance. TF1 is just better at picking hits. Some of theirs became huge hits at home or even internationally.
I think that has become an international trend anyway, from the mid 90s. Actually summer hits make more sense in Europe, as many people are taking long holidays, many around the Mediterranean Sea, than in countries where people are not taking holidays or very short ones.

After listening to the songs some more I'd already change my votes quite a bit :drama:...... but I guess it's too late now! :P

Same here, mainly due to the poor live performances of some of the singers (the songs are still good, the singers OTOH...), but there is always hope that in real time it will work out.

Thanks everyone. I am sure I could have watched it over the net, but the time zone change is always such a drag!

In France, the final will be broadcasted live on France 3.
And if you don't understand french, that will be better. Last year and some years before, the comments were Intervilles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eak2u8Pr9Ck) (ancestor of Games without borders) style which is bad faith, "how could we no win" :drama:, but that's entirely 2nd degree, the goal being to let the contest be only a game and to have fun. Those who would like the Eurovision to be nice and proper don't like that and those who are not used to it don't get it. So if you don't get the language, that's not bad. However that may not be the style of this year's hosts as Stéphane Bern is the specialist of the comments on royalties so Intervilles style is not his area of expertise. :D
The semi-final on the 27th will be broadcasted with delay (at 11:45 pm, local time) by France 4. The EBU (European Broadcast Union) is your friend then as they will stream it live across Europe.

Having heard some of the songs on TV, they actually do sound quite a bit better than they do in the videos on eurovision.tv, fortunately.

Safura (http://www.vgtv.no/?id=30504&category=99) and Lena (http://www.vgtv.no/?id=30511&category=99) in Norwegian TV. :)
Urgh, he makes my skin crawl. And it is a newspaper, not a TV station. I had to laugh when he told Safura she was too young for him. Not only is she the wrong sex, but he is... how can I say it nicely...as attractive as a pig. :scream:

Yes, it is almost time. Hopefully Fred is back home.
