When is US selection camp?

I answered my own question, but did anyone see the end of this - it says Zamarippa declined the invitation to camp. Old news I guess, but I didn't notice.

Yes, someone posted in one of these threads about Zam passing on camp. It sounds like Marta told her not to bother. I think this could be a blessing in disguise. If it turns out that the US needs her vault to have any shot, no matter how risky, then this could boost her chance at making the Olympic team if the situation hasn't changed. That is a lot of ifs but you never know.

No, Martha did not tell her not to bother. From what I heard, Zam and her coaches told Martha worlds wasn't in her plans this year. They both agreed that she needed to spend the rest of her NCAA off season getting her start values up.

What's really exciting to me is that she's positioning herself as an all arounder.

Excellent! I love her floor and especially beam sets, but bars might be a struggle. Either way, I hope she keeps having Valerie Kondos choreograph her FX.

Nikolai Andrianov who is 57 and the 3rd most winning olympian of all time is suffering from a rare condition called Multiple system astrophy or MSA. He is sadly bed ridden at his home in Vladimir, Russia. Terrible tragedy for such a great athlete. Best of wishes the him and his family. Those wishing to send best wishes can do so through an email address included both articles.

Terrible news! I remember him competing as if it yesterday. Thanks Buzz for posting this, I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. It sounds like we won't have him for much longer. :(

I wonder what Shawn's new skill could be. I can't imagine it being anything on the floor since she is so happy about getting back her double pike. I would think it is something on beam or bars. She almost made it sound like she is the only one to do it but I think that was just her excitement taking over. Did she ever compete an arabian on beam? On bars it could be anything since her skill level was never too high to begin with.

I'm thinking it's a new bars skill, too. Maybe a deltchev, but is that "super hard and super cool?" On beam, could it be a full-twisting layout?

Full twisting layout would check both boxes of super hard and super cool, for me! It would also be a skill she could get rather quickly in her comeback as it is not a difficult skill for a gymnast of her ability, it's just hard to do it and stay on the beam!

I think she would be very wise if it were a bars skill, though. She has to see how weak the US is on bars. If she could put herself as a top 3 bar worker then she would not only be helping herself but helping the US immensely. It wouldn't take much in the way of upgrading from her 2008 set, unfortunately. Her double/double dismount is worth a lot, a new release could give her one of the higher D scores.

^Shawn is being profiled as one of the BBC's six athletes to watch leading up to the London Olympic Games. They'll be following her progress over the next 23ish months.

I'm guessing it's a Shushanova on bars, tkachev 1/1.

Now that I've written that, I can't imagine she could do that, but she has to know she needs a high start value on bars to have a chance. So I'm guessing - further - that it's a bars skill, but not a G or anything like that. Maybe a Markelov? Did she ever do a Shap? Definitely get the sense it's only new for her, not new to the sport.

And if she's only getting double pikes back, it certainly isn't anything on FX.

^Good call on the Shushonova...I hadn't thought about that.

What about a Def? Shawn's always been an efficient twister, so I think she would be more than capable of mastering that skill.

Brian, I agree that a full-twisting layout would be both super hard and super cool, to me! I'm secretly hoping that she learns one now. Her layout on beam is certainly big enough to add a full twist.

I'm still waiting for the crazy woman who dares to try a double twisting layout on beam!
