It's funny because some people want Slutnails of the South (Suzanne Yoculan formerly of UGA) to take over after BARTA finally retires.

This isn't the worst idea I've ever heard!

I thought Steve Rybacki was primed to take Martha's position when (if?) she steps down?

That's not such a good idea!!

To think that Yoculan would make a good replacement just because of what she was able to accomplish in the NCAA is very naive. The NCAA is a completely different world than Elite gymnastics. Yoculan had so much success because of her recruiting skills, not just her coaching. Her biggest asset, the ability to recruit, would serve no purpose in Marta's position. JMHO. I'm not saying she would definitely do badly but I don't think you can assume a great NCAA coach would make a great Elite coach, much less a replacement for Marta.

What exactly is Martha's role other than to run insane camps and act as general gymnastics overlord?

I think you pretty much summed it up. ;)

This is a little off topic, but I must say I absolutely HATED it when Martha was one of the coaches of the 2008 Olympic team! I understand why she was there (because none of the girls on the team had a female coach that could fulfill that whole 1 male/1 female coach requirement), but I think it put an immense amount of unnecessary pressure on the team that night to have her breathing down their necks. :(

I think Martha has actually done a fairly good job with the women's program over the past 10 years. IMO, the monthly camps are a good thing...I just wish she knew when to back off the intensity and pressure. I think the team would actually perform a lot better and be a lot healthier if that were to happen.

Well she (and MLT) were the coaches of the Mag 7. But that was before she became the all mighty queen of USA women gymnastics.

I know, but I thought it was weird that the National Team Coordinator was also one of the team coaches. I think the girls are secretly freaked out by Martha, so it probably didn't help that she was rubbing their heads and had her hands around their necks after every routine on the biggest stage of their lives.

Martha's role is to pick the teams for international competitions, and decide who gets assigned to smaller, non-team international events.

She's pretty good at picking the right people. The 2008 selection process was an unfortunate collision between USOC/NBC/USAG and Martha's weaknesses.

As for Suzanne Yoculan, I would trust her to pick the team over Steve Rybacki ANYDAY. Also, they should let her, as NTC, be on the floor with the team during competition. There is a rule that the US women's team has to have at least one female coach on the floor. There are very few contenders who have female coaches who have the experience and knowhow to handles this position effectively. Suzanne would be EXCELLENT in that capacity.

And as for how recruiting translates to the duties of NTC - politics, politics, politics. If you can sell gymnasts and parents on your school, and sell judges on Abby Stack's floor routine, you can handle Nelli Kim and Bruno Grandi, imo.

HAHAHA! You said it perfectly CoCo. I really think she would be the best bet! Another plus is she is independent from what is going on and I think you need that in this role too.

She is also a great motivator IMHO. And she also was a great coach, not just recruiter. She really helped her girls reach their fullest potential IMHO. Not every champion she made was a Courtney Kupets.

Not that I necessarily want Steve Rybacki as the next NTC, but I think it's been alluded to recently in gymnastics circles. :sekret: He's currently the International Elite Committee Chairman in USA Gymnastics, so who knows what will happen.

I was most impressed with her coaching in 2005, I think it was 2005. They were all over the place, barely made it to nationals, then won NCAAs. There were popstick beams involved, iirc.

The womens roster has been announced. No huge surprises. No Shawn, Nastia, Sam, or Ivana...not that I expected them to be on there.
