OMG, Kayla Williams has RETIRED!

http://www.insidegymnastics.com/content/show/newsarticle.aspx?articleid=863&zoneid=1

A little shocking, actually, but I think her foot injury made the decision a lot easier. While she's a great vaulter, I'm not sure if there really would have been a place for her on the 2012 team, especially with only 5 gymnasts per team. Wieber and Sacramone are great vaulters, too, and are also valuable on other events.

Wishing Kayla a successful NCAA career! :)

^ITA. I think with the injuries, the gym problems and perhaps even the return of ASac, Kayla has made the right decision.

Mary Lee Tracy of CGA is notorious for breaking her gymnasts and living off of her success from Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps back in 1996. It seemed like Kayla went to CGA as a last resort (after all the gym drama) and it was no surprise that it didn't turn out well for her.

I thought I saw Liukin (http://i32.tinypic.com/2znqogx.jpg) sitting next to Brady Quinn, but she just tweeted "wish I could have been there".

I think it's Kristina Comforte.

Exactly!

I was pissed about Bianca Flohr last quad. Her bars were great and she could've been a good addition to the Olympic team if MLT hadn't of broken her.

Oh dear. I don't follow US gymnastics uber closely; didn't now MLT had this "reputation".

Even Borden and Phelps attained injuries while working with MLT. Borden only competed at 2 Worlds ever- the 2 1994 Worlds, due to injuries. She hardly competed at all in 1995 and 1996 due to injuries. Phelps's career was basically ended when she was forced to miss the 1997 year due to injuries while still with MLT IIRC. MLT is not that good a coach and indeed is milking her reputation from 96. It is also worth noting her 2 gymnasts were still the bottom feeders of that team, not that they werent great gymnasts and it isnt still an honor to have made that years incredible team too.

My niece was a level 7 gymnast when she moved to the Cincy area a few years ago and immediately tried out for CGA and made the team. She lasted ONE season with them. She did not like any of the coaches or their techniques. She was told repeatedly that she was fat and didn't work hard enough. She was not coached by MLT directly, but she was not a fan of her's.

I think MLT's nickname on another board is slutnails. Which is neither here nor there, its just funny. She has an absolutely horrible reputation. It's always shocking to me when these coaches/gyms with reputations for breaking their athletes still get business. Parkettes, anyone? :o

I think MLT only acquired Williams because no other gym in a 1000 mile radius was willing to take her. It is sad but true. I hope Bama has fun with her, maybe they can keep her Dad out of the picture. Hope the problems were just with her Dad and not also with her, but I get the impression she was more than a handful herself.

It's funny because some people want Slutnails of the South (Suzanne Yoculan formerly of UGA) to take over after BARTA finally retires.

What WAS the story with Kayla Williams and the gym drama's?

She was supposed to head down a day early to do an autograph signing at a local competition last winter. The first day of the competition was canceled, but the autograph signing was still happening. Her parents told her coaches that they didn't want her missing a day of school, and that she wouldn't be coming early after all. Her coaches were pissed and said she had already committed to the autograph signing. They dumped Kayla because they felt like they were losing control of her training situation.

From a USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/2010-04-29-3843580292_x.htm) article:

"We felt she could go down on Saturday, still compete and still sign autographs, and we gave them that option," Elizabeth Williams said. "We would have made her available to do whatever they were asking her do Saturday night or Sunday.

"Hrabrina was 'Friday night or nothing.'"

Spencer, who with her father coached Williams at Bozhi's Gym Nest since she was 6, said the family broke a commitment made months before.

"We're the coaches," Spencer said. "We're the ones that decide how her training goes, where she goes and how she presents the name of the gym and the coaches. She didn't show up."
