Deng Linlin won beam at Chinese Nationals with a 15.050. She tried the layout full! She made some big wobbles, but it is cool to see such a difficult skill.

Kayla Williams will be going to Alabama. She'll fit right in, I think.

Youna Doufournet is injured - compression of the meniscus.

Thanks for the info, LKR! Has Tsurumi been injured? IIRC, her last international event since Worlds was back in December at the Toyota International Competition...

Not that I'm aware of. Japanese Nationals were just three weeks ago, so she's been healthy as of late.

I wonder if Kayla takes up two of Alabama's scholarships, one for herself and one for her father.

It's difficult to compare junior and senior vault competitions. In juniors you are allowed to do both vaults from the same family (for example, Komova did a DTY & an Amanar in the event finals at junior europeans).

Do you think they should make that the case for Seniors too considering the lack of competitors even trying for VT finals in major competitions?

I wish they would allow seniors to do the same entry vault but at the same time I do see why it shows better mastery of the EVENT if you can do vaults from different families. I just hate how so few even try for vault finals. Then again, we used to see athletes make vault EF who didn't have a 2nd vault worth enough (Miller in 92, for example) to really challenge and I would rather see that spot go to someone with a shot and not just someone who nailed their one vault during prelims.

Back to Williams: Is anyone else completely not shocked that she is going to Bama? Bama's recruiting is becoming so predictable, probably more so than any school and it has been that way for a long time. Not sure if it is working, they are always up there but haven't been winning titles (National, at least) as of late.

Miller in vault finals still had as much chance as any other American who didnt make it. Zmeskal didnt have a 2nd vault to really challenge either, and neither did Dawes, so the Americans were never going to win any vault medals from 92-96 in all likelihood. Who would have been better though- Strug, Okino, Moceanu? The only one I could see is maybe Strug but she didnt have the form or landings on any of the harder vaults to win a medal.

Can I just repeat that I hate HATE hate that athletes are allowed to do leaps out of their tumbling passes in order to avoid deductions on the landing.

I totally agree with you! I also hate when the men either roll out of their landings, or do that twist down into a push-up position. Floor exercise used to be my favorite event, but with all the cop-out landings, I'm starting to dislike both men's and women's FX.

I like Rebecca Bross's floor routine this year but she still shows zero facial expression. Such a thing used to be a detriment on floor, but now it doesnt seem to matter under the current code.

Thank you for pinpointing exactly why I don't like her gymnastics. Soulless automaton.

I'm not saying another American should have been in vault finals over Miller. I'm not even saying Miller shouldn't have been there based on the rules at the time. I'm just saying that one of the benefits of today's rules is that someone like Miller wont make it into EF. Not all athletes make it into EF with 2 of the highest SV vaults but they all are certainly doing more than the equivalent of a front tuck as their 2nd vault and almost all of them have a shot at a medal with quite a few a shot at gold.
