Lots of National Championships over the wekend. Cavendish won the British road title (http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/british-road-championships-2013/elite-men-road-race/photos/270546), although I was sort of hoping David Millar could pull out the win in Glasgow. Alex Dowsett kept the time trial championship.

Stijn Devolder won the Belgian road title, although he claimed he wasn't trying to make a statement after being left off the Shack TdF team. BMC's Santamorita won the men's road title in Italy.

FDJ's Vichot wins the French men's road title, and Chavanel gets the French time trial.

In Germany, Greipel gets the road title and Tony Martin defends his TT title. Movistar's Herrada gets the Spanish road title.

Thor smashed the Norwegian road title, but Boasson Hagen got the time trial.

Cancellara got the Swiss time trial title, but BMC's Schar got the road title to the delight of his BMC teammates who seemed really happy for him.

Phinney got his first road race stage win at the Tour of Poland yesterday - barely holding off the peloton after a solo escape (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Af8qs38-K4&feature=youtu.be)

Uran and Renshaw to OPQS next season - official signings can be publicly announced now that it's August. Pellizotti to Katusha, starting off controversy because he's been signed by UCI Pro Tour team too soon after his suspension - although how exactly the timing works is in dispute.

Mark Renshaw: @MarkCavendish - See you in 2014!

Mark Cavendish: ‏ @Mark_Renshaw - shit. Another 2 years of your moaning.

Mark Renshaw: @MarkCavendish Moaning? I guess that means dragging you round the bunch.

Prologue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9q294cWWBs
1st Stage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd0Pkm0gjhY

Stage 1 - there was a key moment to decide the stage winner: the front of the bunch, where the stage favorites were already integrated, made a mistake and instead of following the front of the road they took a turn. In the end, russian Alexander Serov (Rusvelo) won the stage, with Maxime Daniel (Sojasun) and Manuel Cardoso (Caja Rural) in a close second and third.

Stage 2 - There was a breakaway with about 10 riders. Joni Brandão (Efapel) was managing to get away in the front of the race but surprisingly his own team mates started to attack in the bunch to get closer to the fugitives. Everybody was a bit astonished with that attack. Danail Petrov (Caja Rural) was closely following Brandão and even with the bunch already close to them in the last km, it looked clear that Petrov could win the stage. The problem was that both Brandão and Petrov turned to the area where the cars should go near the arrival place instead of going the intended way. As a consequence they both crashed about 150m to the arrival place. Rui Sousa of Efapel took the victory in his hometown. Petrov was p*ssed off and Brandão was almost in tears. In the a tv interview, Brandão said that he was very sad to have been attacked by his own colleagues.

The Tour of Utah is going on with some beautiful scenery that is strikingly different from what I'm used to seeing - Bryce Canyon's red rock arches.

Ted King has a funny blog about cheers from fans on the side of the road. (http://www.iamtedking.com/2013/08/goooooooooooooooooo-team/) He also mentions the "Dollar Monster" - a guy in a Big Foot suit who stands along the road at the Tour of Utah and hands out dollar bills to riders. At least some of them take the dollars. (http://d3j5vwomefv46c.cloudfront.net/photos/large/798848907.jpg?1376190334)

Team classification
Efapel Glassdrive (POR)

Stage 3 - OFM Quinta da Lixa was the big winner. Délio Fernandez won and his compatriot and team mate Alejandro Marque finished 2nd. Marcel Wyss was able to maintain the yellow jersey on the day. There was a crash in the last 5Km of the stage. Three riders had to be taken to hospital but the Sojasun rider was the most affected by the crash and had to withdraw.
Danail Petrov (BUL) of Caja Rural was one of the riders that crashed (his second crash in a row).

Stage 4: It was all about mountain and lots of people were in trouble due to heat (about 41º C). No wonder most riders accepted water bottles from the audience... Lots of attacks but in the end Sergio Pardilla got the best of everybody. Pardilla won the stage and robbed the yellow jersey from Marcel Wyss, who resisted as mush as he could but in the end he had no team mates to support him.
The funny thing is that Pardilla and Rui Sousa were tied in the general classification due to having the exact same time but Pardilla won the stage and therefore gets to be wearing yellow.

Stage 5: There was na usual thing during this stage. 7 riders of team LA Antarte started a breakaway and for quite a long time looked like they were doing some sort of team TT. But there was a reason for such decision: to ensure Márcio Barbosa would be in a position to get the blue jersey. In the end it was mission accomplished. MTN Qhubeka and Caja Rural were the most active teams in leading the bunch to catch the riders in the breakaway. The breakaway survided until about 6Km to the finish line. Manuel Cardoso of Caja Rural won the stage. It was another day with lots of heat. John Murphy (USA) of United Healthcare finished the stage in 11th place.

Tuesday - Day off

Stage 6 - 180Km from Sertã to Castelo Branco. Temperature about 41ºC just like in the previous days. Maxime Daniel (France) of team Sojasun was the winner.
Small highlight vídeo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9unuS0CLz7k

In the general classification, the top 10 are still the same (the gap between 1st and 11th is less than 1m so anything can happen).
No changes in the jerseys leaders.

That's not silly. The scenery and locations is one of the reasons I like to watch cycling. It's like a travelling history and geography lesson.

One of the great things about cycling broadcasts is the possibility to enjoy beautiful landscapes that sometimes we've never even heard about them before. I agree with that.
Please have in mind that my "lol" was about the fact that some viewers lose a bit of interest when the big teams like Sky, BMC or Omega aren't racing but they can still watch it anyway cause there's always something new to learn and enjoy.

Stage 7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4goYD9ZDUo
Stage 8: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQTPnGvW8xI

Stage 7 - winner Raul Alarcon (SPN) of team Louletano. Once again it was a hot day and lots of riders started to strugle right at the begining of the stage.

Stage 8 - Exciting day. This stage wouldn't have looked out of place in the Tour of France. Gustavo Veloso (SPN) of OFM/Quinta da Lixa won the stage. Rui Sousa (POR) of Efapel Glassdrive was second and conquered the yellow jersey. Sergio Pardilla (SPN) of MTN/Qhubeka had a nightmare and lost a lot of time, which meant that he dropped from 1st in the general classification to 16th overall. That was quite a tumble.
Before this stage, the time difference between 1st and 11th place was less than 1m. After stage 8 the diferences finally started to be more significant.

General classification after 8 stages:
1.º Rui Sousa (POR/Efapel-Glassdrive)
2.º Gustavo Veloso (SPN/OFM-Quinta da Lixa), 6s
3.º Hernâni Broco (POR/Efapel-Glassdrive), 31s
4.º Alejandro Marque (SPN/OFM-Quinta da Lixa), 38s
5.º Daniel Silva (POR/Rádio Popular-Onda), 51s
6.º Edgar Pinto (POR/LA-Antarte), 52.s
7.º Virgílio Santos (POR/Rádio Popular-Onda), 1m35s
8.º Marcel Wyss (SUI/IAM Cycling), 2m02s
9.º Nuno Ribeiro (POR/Efapel-Glassdrive), 2.39s
10.º Vladislav Gorbunov (KAZ/Astana Continental), 4m55s

Red Jersey (Points)
Edgar Pinto (POR/Efapel Glassdrive)

Blue Jersey (Mountain)

Tour of Portugal 2013 / Volta a Portugal

Stage 9 - Individual time trial. This was the decisive stage. Marque had a great time trial and moved up from 4th to 1st. Rui Sousa lost the yellow jersey to Marque and is now in 3rd. Nevertheless, Rui Sousa is now wearing the red jersey. Gorbunov dropped out of the top 10. Marque has a 4 second lead over Veloso but it's predictable that Veloso won't attack in the last stage due to the fact that Marque is his team mate.

General classification after 9 stages.
1. Alejandro Marque, SPN (OFM-Quinta da Lixa),
2. Gustavo Veloso, SPN (OFM-Quinta da Lixa), 4s
3. Rui Sousa, POR (Efapel-Glassdrive), 50s
4. Edgar Pinto, POR (LA-Antarte), 2m44s
5. Hernâni Broco, POR (Efapel-Glassdrive), 2m57s
6. Daniel Silva, POR (Rádio Popular-Onda-Boavista), 2m59s
7. Marcel Wyss, SUI (IAM Cycling), 3m14s
8. Virgílio Santos, POR (Rádio Popular-Onda), 5m23s
9. Nuno Ribeiro, POR (Efapel-Glassdrive), 6m49s
10. Célio Sousa, POR (Rádio Popular-Onda-Boavista), 7m49s

Yellow jersey
Alejandro Marque (SPN) - OFM / Quinta da Lixa

White Jersey
Vladislav Gorbunov (KAZ) - Astana

Red Jersey
Rui Sousa (POR) - Efapel Glassdrive

Blue Jersey
Márcio Barbosa (POR) - LA Antarte

***Small note*** on my previous post I mentioned that Edgar Pinto belonged to team Efapel but that is not correct. He is a LA Antarte rider. Sorry.
