Troubled Belgian cyclist Franck Vandenbroucke (http://www.sporza.be/cm/sporza/wielrennen/091012_wielrennen_vandenbroucke_gestorven) has died at age 34. So much talent, but unfortunately so many personal issues. :( Various reports about the cause of his death (http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/belgian-cyclist-found-dead-in-hotel-20091013-gugt.html) - initially reported as a lung embolism, but there are also reports about drugs being found next to his bed.

Why am I not surprised? I feel sorry for huge talent wasted.

ETA: French opening an investigation into "suspicious syringes" found during the TdF (http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/13102009/58/tour-de-france-tour-syringes-under-analysis.html), including some associated with Astana.

Run Lance Run! Just kidding.:P

2010 TdF route will be unveiled tomorrow. You can get up at 5:30 Eastern time to watch live streaming video on Cycling tv and Versus.com. I might consider it for the Giro presentation which tends to be voidier and more of a fashion show.

Nice to see Andy again.

Cheers GardenKitty! Thanks for the off-season reports. How else can I keep myself up to date with cycling? It's getting cold and I already miss the sun flowers of France in July.

The lack of TTs in the tour, I don't mind not having TTT, because it usually takes potential contenders like Cadel out of contention. ITTs used to be a lot more exciting when we had guys like Indurin or Ullrich who scorched through the TT course. For some reason, I don't get the same excitement out of TTs last couple of years. Honchar had his own styling of pedalling, but he was testosterone fueled.

Whenever I check CNN.com I keep seeing ads with Lance for some energy drink where he's working out his upper body. WTH, dude? Upper body mass is not going to help you beat the scrawny-chested guys you're competing with. A nice "gun show" is just extra weight to haul up the mountains.

My computer was in overdrive on Saturday, with TEB, Gymnastics Worlds and Lombardia all on at the same time. Elli Ochowicz, daughter of famed speedskater Sheila Young and noted US cyclist Jim Ochowicz (who is now part of managment at Hincapie's new team - BMC) had a great showing at speed skating team trials. (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/vancouver/speedskating/2009-10-22-team-trials-500_N.htm)

The route for 2010 Tour of California is being announced this morning (with hints on the Governor's twitter account), but this is reportedly the route. (http://www.bikeworldnews.com/index.php/2009/10/22/2010-tour-california-route-revealed/)

Time trial in LA should be interesting, and Levi gets a stage ending in his home town. The race moves to May this year and is up against the Giro which should cut down on a lot of the Euro pros, but it should make for nicer weather. And Bakersfield is an odd stop, but apparently there is actually a pretty big Basque contingent there (http://euskalkazeta.com/ek/?p=410).

wow! 3 essentially Los Angeles stages. I'm stoked, though I would have liked the downtown to the beach time trial. The LA trialthlon bike route went right past my house- I got so psyched that I jumped on and road that leg of the triathlon on the spur of the moment. it was fun.

oh- and I saw Elli race a couple of years ago at the Petit- US single distance championships. I'm a huge speedskating fan as well, but I still can't figure out the Olympic qualification process.

One of these two looks a lot more comfortable than the other (http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/photos/races10/tdf10/tdf10pres-ouch.jpg)

More on the route on the Amgen ToC site (http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/Route/stages.html) According to NY Times reporter Juliet Macur, Lance has confirmed he intends to be at ToC and not the Giro.

Levi Leipheimer, Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie, and Dave Zabriskie have been coordinated-tweeting about their participation in the Tour of California. It's been pretty amusing.

"Where's Alberto" is looking like the "Where's Waldo" of cycling. He's now free to leave Astana if he wants to....where will he go?

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/uci-confirms-contador-can-leave-astana

I remember Bob Roll saying he'd eat his hat if Contador didn't wind up on Caisse de Espargne (major spelling prob, sorry). I think he'd want to go to a better team, personally. Not too good (he's had enough of dealing with "who's the team leader?" situations), but still able to help him out.

There seems to be some question about the application of that UCI rule and lots of ambiguities. Even Contador's manager (his brother) has said they'll have to look at the situation because the interpretation of the law is confusing.

This article from Bicycling discusses the situation (http://bicycling.com/blogs/boulderreport/2009/10/23/contract-labor-law-questions-complicate-contadors-future/), but this certainly is an interesting question.

While Contador is clearly the biggest name affected, Astana had tried to keep a number of riders (including Zubeldia and Popo) who wanted to go to Radio Shack. So this could end up affecting a few people and teams. Quick Step has apparently made a big push recently for Contador as well, and reportedly offered to let him bring along 4 riders with him. It will be fun to see how this all plays out.

Giro route announced today, with a lot more pomp (and pink) than the TdF presentation:

Garzelli finds something amusing (http://d.yimg.com/a/p/sp/getty/79/fullj.c3c6ceaf6ef3353bc0f3cb6989ed8f78/c3c6ceaf6ef3353bc0f3cb6989ed8f78-getty-italy-ita-cycling-giro.jpg)

Menchov poses by the map (http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20091024/capt.193a9cbb540a46858c98cc8e993422ef.italy_cyclin g_giro_d_italia_mil101.jpg)

Dutch actress is the face of the Giro this year (http://d.yimg.com/a/p/sp/getty/4b/fullj.10222d3d72cb3c234c65731cfdf1fb8f/10222d3d72cb3c234c65731cfdf1fb8f-getty-cycling-ita-tour-stages.jpg), in honor of the race starting in Amsterdam

Pozzato and his hair (http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/05IsfmafkJ9sy/610x.jpg) were there

Menchov chooses to pose with the actress rather than the other riders (http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0aILgU00UX0He/610x.jpg)

A pretty blunt interview with Bruyneel translated on cyclingnews (http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/bruyneels-year-of-living-stressfully):

I'm being judged on the results and the international image of the team, not on the image of the team in a godforsaken country such as Kazakhstan.

thanks- that was an interesting read. I'm interested in the World Relief Million Dollar Ride he's doing in Africa in November. I wish I could go.
