PML, the SIFF reviewer linked to this thread as evidence of "fan interest"

I may have made a mistake seeing this in the press screenings vs. the public showings. Seems there's (not surprisingly) a lot of fan interest. Often a documentary filled with participants or huge fans make the festival experience far better than just seeing the movie on it's own - see Blood on the Flat Track notes for one of the better examples. So if you're going to go see this doc - might want to try for the first showing where I'm guessing the best post film discussion will take place.

They twittered us as being the Johnny Weir fan board :HA!:

Cool. :cheer2: Can't wait to read reviews from actual skating fans.

aha! So there WILL be a post film discussion! I'm guessing that means that someone connected with the film will be there to represent. :cheer2:

Does Direct TV carry the Sundance station? I can't seem to find the station on my tv.

I think it is a premium channel. I have it, probably as part of a Starz or HBO package.

That explains that. Thank you!

Sorry, I'm slow... are they going to air the documentary on the Sundance channel soon? I thought they were just premiering the movie at a festival.

The dvd will be premeiring at the festival and will be available for sale sometime between the fall and the Olympics. The Sundance Channel will be showing a weekly reality series about Johnny, similiar to the dvd but a start date has not been announced yet - it will be before the Olympics though. I expect what is shown on the Sundance Channel to be different then what is shown in the dvd.

DVD? Are they gonna have a DVD of this docu for sale at the festival? :D

I don't think so: the DVD is being played onscreen, not a film projection.

My roommate saw the press screening, and although he said that people who are interested in figure skating (he's not) would be more interested in the movie, he thought it was quite good on its own.

Article with extensive quotes by James Pellerito, one of the documentary's writer/directors: "Pop Star" shows hard work behind the glamour (http://web.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090515&content_id=64730&vkey=ice_news)

Lots of info and interesting quotes in the article Sylvia posted.

From the article:

In addition to the documentary, which premiers in New York next month, Pellerito and Barba are working on a documentary series to air on the Sundance cable channel next year.

"The movie takes Johnny through the world championships in 2008; the series picks up from there," Pellerito said. "The focus of the series is how Johnny deals with [his fifth-place finish] at U.S. nationals this year, not going to worlds, and the challenges he has trying to make the [2010] Olympic team again."

"The idea is for it to start [airing] in very early January," Barba added. "There will be eight episodes, seven [taking place] before the Olympics and the eighth after the Olympics. That final episode will be sort of a 'Where is Johnny now?' wrap-up."

Most of the films at SIFF are shown from dvd now. Can't imagine they'd be selling copies - they want folks to come and watch it there!

Glad to hear this opinion. JWe has enough personality and spark to potentially keep a non-fs crowd interested in his pursuits. If he didn't have the IT factor, I can't imagine that SunDance would pick up the option on this series.
