Twitter is a micro-blog, which means its like a blog but it's limited to only 140 characters per-update. So you can't write paragraphs about what you're doing. You can only write a sentence or two. It's actually becoming quite popular, especially among companies and famous people (the general public seems a little more resistant since the benefits are mostly to corporations and well known figures). I am on Twitter and really like it. Quite simple to use and much less complicated than something like Facebook. Great to keep in touch with people.

I may be wrong about this (I don't actually use my Twitter account), but a lot of times people will chose to "follow" celebrities and people whom they may not necessarily know on Twitter. I'm guessing that Petukhov doesn't actually know Perez (hehe--that would be a photo op I'd love to see), but he can still follow him if he wants.
