England's manager Fabio Cappello's wife is going to join him in South Africa despite him discouraging the team's WAG from accompanying the team to South Africa.

Eusebio was in Toronto recently. And Rogers will have all the matches Ondemand. :)

The deadline for anouncing final team selections have come and gone but Australia has not made any announcement about it's final team. I wonder why... I would understand maybe Italy being secretive but Australia?

Brad Pitt joined other big name celebs like Spike Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oscar De La Hoya amoung others in promoting the USA's bid to host the 2018 WC. But most believe it will go to a European country and England is favoured to win. That is on condition there is no more self inflicted wounds to their own bid effort.

Why is it such a given that Europe will get it? Just because it's in the western hemisphere in 2014??? And I wonder if the Brits would get the WC so closely after having the Olympics? Don't get me wrong, It's high time the WC should be played in the UK, but before the USA??

We had ours in 1994. They had theirs in 1966. That possibly puts us off until 2022, at the earliest. It may last another cycle if FIFA wants it to go to Asia before North America. At that, Mexico wants it again, too.

Either way, I just hope I live long enough to get to see it, let alone attend it.

NJL (...I did attend 1 game in Orlando in 1994 - Netherlands v Belgium...Belgium won it in a stadium that was dominated by the color orange...;)...)

I sympathize with all the bidders. It will be heartbreak for whoever do not get to host the tournament. Except Qatar. I think it would be mistake to send it to the conservative middle east.

As long as we are on the topic of the WC. How many rabid fans around the world will be making all sorts of excuses to stay away from work or school so they could watch the games. LOL Here is a list of the top ten World Cup excuses.

Neil, I just can't imagine FIFA awarding the WC to Mexico anytime soon based upon the state of the nation. Too much crime, too many kidnappings, too much uncertainty. So unless our Canadian friends put up a bid, you'd gotta think we'd be the choice.

My guess is that the 2022 WC would be the one to come to the USA. There's too much money at stake for FIFA not to want to bring it back to the USA. Plus, that would be 28 years since the USA held the WC, so it's not like they are bringing it back too soon.

Could someone tell me why both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups are being awarded at the same time?

Rafa Benitez is done as Liverpool's manager. Inter-Milan is looking for a new coach so perhaps he will go there next, however there is no word on who is to replace him. Liverpool is also deep in debt and it's American owners have put the team up for sale.

Mexico beat Italy 2-1 yesterday in a friendly. Hopefully Mexico can build on this win going into the World Cup next week. :)

Didier Drogba and Rio Ferdinand are just a couple of the big names whose fittness is in question for the big tournament next week. Ivory Coast is in the "group of death" so they need all the help they can get, and Drogba's loss will be keenly felt.

If the FIFA had been concerned with this, they would have never given the WC to South Africa and Brasil.

It is now confirmed that Rio Ferdinand is out of the WC, but Drogba's condition is still not certain. At first it was thought that he had broken his arm but now we are being told that his arm is just dislocated and he may be able to rejoin the team at a later date. Andrea Pirlo of Italy is also injured and it is not known when he will be able to rejoin his team.

Have there ever been so many "big"/critical injuries so close to the opening in any other WC? So distressing!

Not to my knowledge, and I am so disappointed for Ivory Coast because I was picking them to go the furthest amoung all the African countries in the tournament. While we are on the topic of injuries; Jozy Altidore of the USA is in doubt, while Julio Cesar is in doubt for Brazil because of persistent back problems. He has missed two practices in a row.
