Lionel Messi was voted FIFA player of the year. To be honest, I love Messi, but I am not sure he was the best choice. Messi really have not been at his best this year.

I wasn´t thinking to do it, and now I´m not sure what´s going to happen, once [Togo team (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jan/09/togo-withdraw-africa-cup-of-nations) has withdrawn after the gun attack to their team bus, which killed three persons :(

Sad day for football but I was still holding out hope that they would not pull out. There are questions being asked as to why the team was travelling to the tournament on a bus in the first place. Terribly sad day for all the players, teams and countries. Angola has being trying so hard of overcome their decades long civil war. Best wishes for their goalkeeper who was shot int he stomach. :(

Yes, it's a pity. It was because of the news that I asked that question in the first place. Really too bad but I think the tournament starts today and I'm eager to see how the other paricipants will cope with this change.

Question for footie (a.k.a. soccer) fans. Is the African Nations Cup a qualifying tournament for the World Cup?

No. The Qualification round is already over, the groups (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/standings/index.html) for the World Cup were already drawn.

No, it's to crown the real champions of football on the continent. So many of these countries are really good and talented and the qualifying is always dificult and competitive even for African champions -case in point Egypt is a really good team but they are not going to the world cup this year. I have hoped that more slots wold be given to more African countries by FIFA come next world cup.

Int'l friendly in LA:

Honduras 3 v 1 USA

To call it a poor performance by the USA is an understatement.

I am so glad I decided not to go to that game! What a disgraceful performance by everyone involved. I can't think of a player who had a good game, and Bradley did himself no favors with the lineup he put out there. Sure he's supposedly looking at players who may make the WC squad, but when you get down to it, only maybe three or four of the players on the pitch really have a shot at the team. So what's the point of putting a guy like Cunningham out there instead of Casey? Cunningham has no shot at making the WC squad, where Casey has a pretty decent shot. Anyway, this pitiful performance is best forgotten about asap!

In the first semi final of the African Nations cup Ghana leads Nigeria 1-0 after the first half. Algeria will play their intense rivals Egypt in the other semi final. Best luck to all the teams, but I am biased a bit in favour of Ghana because some of my acquaintances are from Ghana. :)

Am I reading this right that Egypt beat Algeria 4-0?! That is a huuuuge margin to lose by at this stage of the tournament.

And, at the end, Algeria was down to 8 players...... The score & the red cards seemed to play off of one another. Not Algeria's finest hour.
