Well I put this in the other thread but I will put it here as well. Brazil is hosting BOTH the 2016 summer games and the 2014 World Cup. I still am in a total state of shock that this country will be allowed to host both tournaments! This is something I did not think anyone could pull off, but Brazil will try.

Actually, the US hosted the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 Olympics, but I believe all the infrastructure was already in place for the World Cup.

Oh! frabjoyous day!! So has the USA... Mexico, too...:D

In CONCACAF on 10/10/09:

Honduras 2 v 3 USA
Mexico 4 v 1 El Salvador
Costa Rica 4 v 0 Trinidad & Tobago

The HEX Standings:

USA....................19 points
Mexico.................18
Costa Rica............15
Honduras..............13
El Salvador.............8
TnT.......................5

Scheduled for 10/14/09 (home teams listed first)

El Salvador v Honduras
TnT v Mexico
USA v Costa Rica

Unlike last nights game the USA will be on national TV live at 8PM EDT from RFK in DC.

On 10/14/09 Costa Rica has the toughest match since USA's Head Coach Bob Bradley has stated the USA's goal is the finish 1st in the Hex & for any team beating the USA at home is now a huge challenge.

Mexico should beat Tnt & Honduras should do the same to El Sal.

No matter what, the USA & Mexico are in. Costa Rica & Honduras are fighting for the guaranteed #3 spot. Either of those 2 could finish 4th and have to play the 5th place finisher from South America.

But, for me the best news is that we're going to the big dance again...

Sweden won't be going to South Africa. :( There might be a theoretical, microscopic chance, but it largely depends on Portugal loosing to Malta, which won't happen. Coach Lars Lagerbäck has stepped down, and so far there's no word on who'll take over.

FYI: The USA v Costa Rica match will be on ESPN2 & Galavision at PM ET. No need to try to find a sports bar that has the Spanish language cable station that was used in the US for the Honduras game...;)

USA was extremely lucky to come away with the victory. Former LA Galaxy striker Carlos Pavon blows not only a penalty kick, but another easy goal which allowed the Yanks to escape.

We Galaxy fans could have warned the Hondouran manager that you can't count on Pavon! :P He scored all of two goals for the Galaxy, both in the same game, both off of exquisite crosses from Beckham, and both came in a loss! And that was it for the whole season! A waste of a uniform if you ask Galaxy fans.

I'd like to see the USA win the Hex so we might get a better seed in the WC. I'm tired of the USA always being in the group of death!

I believe that the seeding is done on other criteria. The USA won the hex last time & Mexico was seeded. Evidently past WC performances are factored into the equation. If so we are in a world of hurt since our performance at the WC has been close to abysmal...:(

NJL (and, we missed 2 possible goals early, too....I could have been a 5-3 win for us as easily as a 4-3 loss or a 3-3 tie...but, I'll take it, any way we can get it. Now I'd love to see us beat CRC to win the hex, and pay them back for that 3-1 humiliation in Saprissa and possibly make them play the #5 from South America, too...;) ...all that would be very good, IMvhO.....:D...)

I hope the USA reaches the quarter finals again, and maybe going as far as the semis this time! I am going to pin my hopes for Concacaf on the USA. LOL

I know you are correct NJL, I'm just hoping that winning the Hex and our reaching the finals in the Conf Cup would count for something. You see, I blotted out the disaster of 2006 (and 1998 for that matter) and am only counting 2002. Here's hoping FIFA see's the form we are in a gives us a little credit.

But I'm afraid the USA will find themselves in a group with Brazil, Germany, France or Italy....it just always happens...:soapbox:

I think being grouped w/Italy is required. They've been in nearly all of our groups since 1990, IIRC. I'd almost like to play them again. I think we can take them this time out. The same w/France. Germany & Brazil are much more problematic, IMvhO....;)

In any event, Mexico winning the Gold Cup & their performance in the last 2 WCs may give them the edge along with their current form that includes defeating us the last 2 time we played them.

It's being reported that USMNT Forward Charlie Davies was injured in a car crash in DC this morning. Nothing definite other than he was injured in a "fatal" car crash. More info & a link as soon as I find out more.
