Here is how one columnist described the match.

Swedish youngster Linus Sjoberg was given a trial by Man U. I am gonna keep my eyes on this kid. Man U has a nack for spotting young talent. And since losing Ronaldo and Tevez they may just be looking around for some more raw undiscovered talent.

Zenit FC has fired coach Dick Advocaat. He was supposed to leave later this year anyway to coach the Belgium national team. So why fire such a successful coach now? It is not his fault that their more talented played bolted for green pastures.

Mexico 2 v 1 USA
Expected result. USA is now 0-23-1 playing Mexico in Mexico. USA stays in 2nd place in the Hex. Mexico jumps to 3rd.

Two more games this evening. Will post them when final scores are available.

NJL (...:(...)

ETA: TnT 1 v 0 El Salvador
and Honduras 1 v 0 Costa Rica at the half.

ETA2: Honduras won 4:0 with 2 goals in the last 2 minutes of play. The home field advantage in CONCACAF is huge.

Next up on 9/5/09 (home teams listed first):
USA v El Salvador
Costa Rica v Mexico
Honduras v TnT

Then on 9/9/09 (home teams listed first):
El Salvador v Costa Rica
Mexico v Honduras

Standings (AKA "the table") as of 8/12/09

Costa Rica.....12 points
El Salvador......5

Evidently the 1st tiebreaker in CONCACAF is goals scored, not goal differential.

ETA3: It isn't based on goals scored, but on goal diff.

Corrected standings are -
Costa Rica.........12 points
El Salvador..........5

The USA still must play Honduras in Honduras, where they are proving to be very difficult to beat, and TnT in TnT, where we lost the last time we played there, along with home games against El Salvador and Costa Rica. I see 6 points to a max of 9 or 10 out of 12 possible out of that schedule for a total of 16 to 20 points. With 19 or 20 points we go to South Africa in 2010. We must win against El Sal & TnT for any chance to advance. Those would give us 16 points. Even with 16 we may not advance. With less than 16 we won't. I can't see a win in Honduras. A tie & 1 point will be excellent. And we must get at least a point from Costa Rica, but a win would be much, much better.

Lackluster performance by the USA. In particular the mid-field play was completely ineffective. Mexico held the ball all game long and the USA only had a couple of chances the entire game. I don't know if that was Bradley's strategy, but Clark and Michael Bradley were horrible and broke up virtually none of Mexico's play. Here's hoping newly eligible German D-Mid Jermaine Jones gets a shot, as he's gotta be better than what we have.

I know that the EPL has only just started but that first lost to Burnley last week scared the @#$&% out of me. Nice to see they are back to their winnin ways with a 5-0 win over Wigan. PHEW!

Manchester City's spending spree continues with a 24 million purchase of Joleon Lescott services. All this spending better produced results or else somebody's head will roll. LOL

Calum Davenport who plays for West Ham is in stable condition in the intensive care unit after being stabbed in the legs outside his mother's home. It seems his sister's boyfriend has been charged with the assult on Davenport and his mother who it seems was also injured but not seriously. Hope he get well soon.

Pavel Nedved has retired, so good luck to him in whatever he does next. And Arsenal made it to the group stages of the CL. Was there ever any doubt? LOL

Lionel Messi has been awarded the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year prize, and the CL group draw is today. There are some verrrrry interesting results in Europa League, Bremen beat Aktobe 8-3, Ajax beat Slovan Bratislava 6-1, and Everton beat Olomouc 5-0. There promises to be many more lopsided victories before the day is over. To be honest I have never heard of these losing teams before.
