I agree the 93 Worlds qualification round was Shanon's best AA performance ever. Her most difficult floor routine ever even without the double layout. Her best bars work ever with her hitting her handstands and probably having her most difficult routine on bars ever. Her beam similar to other years but with the pike full in dismount! It is a shame in a way she couldnt duplicate that the rest of the competition. The field that year was the worst Worlds field in gymnastics history (rivaled only by maybe the 2004 Olympics field), so combine that with Shanon's own difficulty and abilities being at their all time peak she probably could have swept all 5 golds had she performed at her best. Has any women ever done that before?

Here is a routine with a better view of Shannon's full twisting double pike dismount off beam:

Thanks! Somehow I must have missed this period when she was throwing that dismount. I wonder how many competitions she did it at it, maybe just these two? That was probably Shannon's most difficult and well executed beam routine. She nailed the interior and only had a small hop on the pike dismount. Crazy good.

Not sure who the first was, but I remember Galieva did this dismount as early as 1991 Worlds.

I really wish Shannon had done that beam routine in the AA final. Then Dawes would have been only fighting for a medal, never even close to a gold, and probably would have done just the yurchenko full and won an AA medal.

Here is a pretty darn good beam routine from Miller in 2001. It was one of those cheesy events where they put choreography in everything but the skills were nice. I don't remember her competing front aerials or the gainer layout stepout, the latter was especially well done. I think if she had continued to train from 96 and stayed healthy, she could have contended for another gold medal on beam. Her bars was also quite good in 2000 at the Trials (didn't she end up winning the event at Nationals?) so maybe she could have even contended for a medal on that event!

Elise Ray won bars at Nationals in 2000. Beckerman, Miller, and Chow ended up in a 3 way tie for 2nd.

re: The piked full-in off BB - I did think of Mari Kosuge first, who gk_891 named.

1989! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQsopP0HrnM

I remember catching the 1993 American Cup and even as a kid at the time looking around the empty living room saying, "Is anyone else noticing this crazy difficulty?" As I recall, she did a round-off layout into another layout as a mount, then three layout step-outs in a row (with no back handspring to prep), a back pike, and then the piked full-in. Two falls, but crazy difficulty!

Geez, watching the video from '93 - Tim and Elfi actually explained the scoring system in detail!

Aww, Mari Kosuge. She was throwing monster difficulty on floor and beam! Wow, I just looked her up on Google, and she's a coach in the US (and kinda looks like Miki Ando!). http://www.gymnasticsworld.com/Pages/Staff/Mari/index.php

Really nice difficulty in that routine. I also really liked Kozlova's piked full in off of beam. She had really nice height and amplitude.

Stovbchataya's didn't have quite the same height and power behind it but what was most impressive about hers was how often she stuck the landing. Virtually every video of her beam routine that I found in 1992 to 1993 shows her sticking it cold.

Apparently it is valued at 7.2, but that seems lowish to me.

Holy crap that beam routine you guys are talking about from Shannon in 1993 was awesome! Wow. I am so impressed and I honestly don't remember ever seeing that before. Where was I back then?!

Miller's gymnastics in 1993 was the strongest it ever was. Even stronger than 92 and 94 when she was also great. The field at the World gymnastics Championships was the weakest in history too, along with possibly the 2004 Athens Olympic field. It was too bad in a way Shannon didnt like she did in the qualifications. She should have won the AA by several tenths that year, she was so much better than the rest, and she could have really won all 4 event finals.

Just seen this; don't know if it's been posted on this thread before; apologies if it has. This really makes me  Is Sveta drunk? Or is she always like that? Besides, I really like her. Plus, Mo is probably my favourite gymnast of all-time, so it's great to see them together.
